CAIIB preparation: core papers, electives and study strategy

Plan CAIIB preparation with Bankers Tutorial: explore core papers, elective choices, case-based study, examination guidance and published learning resources.

ORIGINAL STUDY GUIDANCE

Build a clear preparation plan.

CAIIB preparation builds on foundational banking knowledge and asks you to reason through more complex decisions. Reading a chapter is only the start: you need to interpret a case, choose a method, work with figures and explain a conclusion. This Bankers Tutorial guide helps you bring the compulsory papers and your elective into one study plan. Use it to organise preparation, then check the actual course pages for teaching arrangements and the official IIBF sources for examination requirements.

Confirm the qualification and paper structure

Eligibility requires completion of JAIIB or Part I of the Associate Examination and a current IIBF membership subscription. The four compulsory papers are Advanced Bank Management, Bank Financial Management, Advanced Business & Financial Management, and Banking Regulations and Business Laws. Choose one elective from Rural Banking, Human Resources Management, Information Technology & Digital Banking, Risk Management or Central Banking. Match the elective to your knowledge and learning goals rather than assuming one is universally easier.

Study cases as decisions with incomplete information

For every case, separate the given facts from your assumptions. State the decision to be made, identify the relevant concepts and show the steps leading to your conclusion. Ask what additional fact would change the answer. This approach is useful across numerical, managerial and legal-study scenarios. It prevents a familiar phrase in a question from triggering an answer before you have read the whole situation.

Practise for the question format

The current rules describe online two-hour papers for 100 marks, with objective questions and caselets; some numerical questions may require a typed answer without options. There is no negative marking under the current rules. Passing requires 50 per subject, with an alternative single-attempt route of at least 45 in each and 50% aggregate. Practise calculation entry as well as answer selection, and follow the official instructions for your attempt.

Build a connected revision schedule

Reserve separate sessions for calculation practice, concept explanation and source-based revision. Combine them in a weekly mixed exercise. For example, a hypothetical expansion proposal can raise questions about appraisal, funding, risk and governance. Keep each answer tied to the relevant paper so integration does not blur definitions. Short retrieval sessions during the week can protect continuity when work responsibilities make long study periods difficult.

Choose support that addresses your gaps

Before selecting a course, identify whether you need structured teaching, numerical demonstrations, case discussions or revision discipline. Check the published course description for included subjects, language, access validity and delivery format. Use the linked subject guides to inspect the learning demands of each paper. Retain a dated list of official updates and revisit any material affected by a change. More resources help only when you know how each one fits your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to complete JAIIB before taking CAIIB?

The current IIBF eligibility rules require JAIIB or Part I of the Associate Examination, together with a current membership subscription. Check the official rules before registering.

How should I choose an elective?

Compare the syllabus with your present role, prior knowledge and future learning interests. Look at the type of work required rather than relying on claims that a paper is easy.

Are mock-test scores enough to show readiness?

Use scores alongside evidence that you can explain decisions and reproduce numerical methods. Review guesses and recurring mistakes, then retest the underlying skill.
