01 / UNDERSTANDING
Understand the idea
Explain a policy announcement through two customers with different loan terms. Use the contrast to show why a careful banker checks the contract before translating macroeconomic news into an instalment claim. Let both borrowers ask why the same announcement has different immediate effects for them. A clear answer uses their loan terms and the timing of reset decisions, making the macroeconomic concept useful without pretending that every policy move follows one universal repayment path.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
A policy decision can influence short-term financial conditions and participants' expectations. Banks respond within their funding structures, pricing arrangements and risk assessments. The eventual effect on deposit rates, lending rates, spending and investment is a transmission process rather than an automatic identical adjustment.
Borrower outcomes depend on the contract, reset arrangements and other pricing components. A change in a policy rate does not alone determine the timing or size of every instalment change. Analysis should identify the transmission link being discussed and the evidence available for it.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
Two borrowers hear the same policy announcement. One loan has an upcoming contractual reset; the other has a fixed rate for the stated term. Their immediate payments need not move together. The banker explains the actual terms instead of promising that a headline policy change will instantly alter both loans.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Must every borrower's instalment change immediately after a policy-rate change?
Show the answer and reasoning
No.
The contract determines how and when a particular loan's rate can change. Transmission also depends on benchmark arrangements, funding conditions and other pricing components. A policy move is relevant context, but the loan documents and reset provisions are needed to explain the customer's actual repayment outcome.
Two traps to watch for.
- Assuming every financial rate changes by the same amount immediately.
- Ignoring fixed-rate and reset terms when explaining a loan.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Turn understanding into practice
Trace policy conditions through bank funding and customer pricing.
Compare the two borrowers' contractual reset arrangements.
Identify which link needs evidence before predicting payment changes.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
