Cloze passages and coherent word choice

Choose missing words by combining grammar, meaning and the passage’s direction, using surrounding sentences rather than matching an isolated blank with the first locally plausible option.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Understand the idea

A missing word belongs to a network of meaning. Looking backward and forward through that network often resolves a blank more reliably than repeatedly staring at the immediate phrase.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A cloze passage removes words from a connected text. Each choice must fit its sentence grammatically and preserve the larger argument. Read the whole passage before filling difficult gaps, noting whether it explains a cause, offers a contrast or describes a sequence. Local correctness is necessary but may not be sufficient.

Collocations, verb forms and reference words narrow the choices. A connector such as however signals contrast, while therefore introduces a conclusion. Re-read the completed passage to check that one selection has not broken a later reference or reversed the author’s point. More than one familiar word can fit a blank in isolation.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original passage reads: The branch added a help desk. Consequently, first-time users found the process easier. A contrast connector such as however would undermine the intended cause-and-result relation unless the surrounding text supplied a different meaning. The chosen connector must therefore match the relationship between the two complete sentences, not just the blank’s punctuation.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Choose the connector: The form was incomplete; ___, the application could not be processed. Options: therefore, nevertheless.

Show the answer and reasoning

Therefore.

An incomplete form provides the stated reason for non-processing, so the second clause follows as a consequence. Therefore expresses that link. Nevertheless would suggest an unexpected contrast, which the supplied sentence does not support. Reading both clauses as a complete thought makes the choice clearer than judging the missing word alone.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Choosing from the blank’s immediate words without reading the passage.
  • Using a contrast connector where the text requires a result.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Turn understanding into practice

  1. Read once for overall direction.

  2. Check grammar and collocation at each blank.

  3. Reread the completed passage for coherence.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
