01 / UNDERSTANDING
Understand the idea
Compounding becomes intuitive when a learner follows the balance over time. The small extra amount is linked to previously earned interest rather than treated as a mysterious formula effect.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Simple interest uses the original principal throughout the stated period. Compound interest updates the balance at each compounding point, allowing later interest to include earlier interest. The rate, period and compounding frequency must use compatible units; an annual rate cannot be applied repeatedly to months without an appropriate conversion or instruction.
For annual compounding over whole years, multiply principal by the growth factor once per year. The gap from simple interest appears after the first compounding period. Actual deposits or loans can use different conventions and terms, so classroom rates should remain labelled hypothetical rather than presented as offers or financial advice.

A worked learning case
Original educational case. At a hypothetical annual rate of 10%, ₹1,000 earns ₹200 simple interest over two years. With annual compounding, it becomes ₹1,100 after year one and ₹1,210 after year two, giving ₹210 interest. The extra ₹10 is interest on the first year’s ₹100, under the simplified assumptions and without any charges or taxes.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Original practice: What is the amount on ₹2,000 after two years at 10% compounded annually, ignoring charges and taxes?
Show the answer and reasoning
₹2,420.
The annual multiplier is 1.10. After one year the balance is ₹2,200, and after the second it is ₹2,420. Equivalently, compute 2,000 × 1.10². The amount includes principal; the interest alone is ₹420. Stating the requested quantity prevents an otherwise correct calculation from answering the wrong question.
Two traps to watch for.
- Reporting interest when the question asks for total amount.
- Applying an annual rate once per month without conversion.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Turn understanding into practice
Write rate period and compounding frequency.
Calculate the first two balances manually.
Separate final amount from interest earned.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
