Practice & review: Planning resilience across outsourced services

Outsourced delivery can make a bank dependent on external systems and providers. Learn to map critical services, test workable alternatives and retain management accountability instead of assuming that a contract transfers the institution's responsibility for continuity.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Use an original case where two backup channels depend on one common platform. Ask which test would reveal the weakness and what additional information is needed. In paper review, distinguish provider oversight from the operational ability to continue a service, and avoid selecting a contract-renewal response when the facts concern unavailable recovery capability.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Operational resilience asks whether important services can continue or recover through disruption under realistic conditions. Plans need tested communications, data access, staff readiness and feasible alternatives. An exit option written into a contract may be difficult to execute if replacement capacity, compatible records or transition knowledge are unavailable when the institution needs them.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

A fictional bank uses one provider for several customer-facing workflows. A disruption reveals that two supposed backup routes depend on the same infrastructure. Management maps the shared dependency, tests an alternative process and checks access to essential records. The exercise assesses whether the service can continue, rather than counting the number of contracts labelled as backups.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Why can two contracted backup services fail to provide genuine operational independence?

Show the answer and reasoning

They may share the same underlying infrastructure or other dependency.

Different service names or contracts do not ensure that the failure paths are separate. A common platform, location or connectivity provider can disrupt both arrangements at once. Resilience analysis maps those dependencies and tests practical alternatives, including data access and staff capability, before treating the existence of a backup contract as demonstrated continuity.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Assuming outsourced delivery transfers all management accountability.
  • Counting backup contracts without testing common dependencies.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Map provider dependencies behind one important service.

  2. Identify the records and skills needed for an alternative process.

  3. Test a disruption that disables the shared infrastructure.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
