Practice & review: Logical assumptions: identify the missing bridge

An assumption is an unstated condition an argument relies upon. Assumption questions reward precise reading of the proposed conclusion and the evidence, especially when a recommendation depends on a hidden behavioural link.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Construct an original short argument with one necessary bridge and distractors that strengthen the policy without being required by its reasoning. A helpful outcome may strengthen the case without being necessary for it. An original checkpoint is: Is "every learner prefers evening study" a necessary assumption in the example? Supported answer: No; only some intended users need to benefit for the stated rationale to operate. Explain the decisive fact, then alter one condition and solve again. This exercise is original practice, not an official past-paper question.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A statement that strengthens a proposal need not be necessary to it. Do not replace the given argument with a broader policy debate or personal preference. A useful study check is to underline the conclusion and circle its stated supporting evidence, then negate each candidate and test the original argument again. Explain why the method fits the stated facts before applying it to a changed situation.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

A training centre proposes extending its library hours because learners who work during the day need evening study space. The proposal assumes that at least some of those learners can and would use the additional hours. It does not require every learner to prefer evenings, nor prove that library access alone will improve examination scores.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Is "every learner prefers evening study" a necessary assumption in the example?

Show the answer and reasoning

No; only some intended users need to benefit for the stated rationale to operate.

Negating the statement gives at least one learner who does not prefer evening study. That does not destroy the case for serving working learners who do. The universal claim is therefore stronger than the argument requires; a narrower link between additional hours and actual use is the relevant assumption.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Choosing a desirable consequence instead of a necessary premise.
  • Ignoring universal words such as every, never and only.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Underline the conclusion and circle its stated supporting evidence.

  2. State the missing link in the narrowest defensible form.

  3. Negate each candidate and test the original argument again.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
