01 / UNDERSTANDING
Learning objectives
Cover parties, undertaking, presentation, document conditions and discrepancy concepts. The objective is to distinguish sale performance from document compliance without claiming complete coverage of specialised trade rules.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
A documentary credit supports trade through a bank undertaking on stated terms, commonly linked to a compliant presentation of documents. Identify applicant, beneficiary, issuing bank and any other bank role before reading the document sequence. The sale contract and the banking undertaking are related but distinct arrangements.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
Original educational case. A buyer asks its bank to issue a credit in favour of an exporter. The credit requires an invoice and a transport document with specified details. The exporter ships good-quality goods but presents a document with inconsistent shipment information. The physical quality does not remove the documentary discrepancy; handling depends on the credit terms and applicable process.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Original practice: Does good physical quality of goods automatically make discrepant documents compliant under a documentary credit?
Show the answer and reasoning
No. Goods quality and document compliance are separate questions.
The bank examines the presentation against the credit’s terms and the governing framework. Physical goods belong to the commercial transaction, whereas the credit operates through documents. A buyer may be happy with the shipment while a documentary problem remains. Conversely, apparently compliant documents do not constitute a bank inspection of the goods.
Two traps to watch for.
- Assuming a bank guarantees the physical quality of shipped goods.
- Ignoring the exact documentary terms because shipment occurred.
