Topic guide: Networks, addresses and name resolution

Distinguish local networking, inter-network routing and domain-name resolution, using a simple browser request to separate the roles of switches, routers, DNS and the application seen by a user.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover network roles, local versus external connectivity and basic name resolution. The objective is functional distinctions, with deeper protocol detail added only where the current preparation requirements call for it.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A network connects computing devices so they can exchange data and share resources. A local switch commonly connects devices within a network, while a router forwards traffic between networks. These roles are different from a browser, which is an application the user operates to request and display web content.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In an original scenario, an office computer can print to a local network printer but cannot open an external website. Local communication works, so the symptom alone does not prove that every network component failed. Possible causes belong to other stages such as external connectivity, name resolution or the destination service; the case does not identify one without more evidence.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Which role is most associated with forwarding traffic between networks: router or word processor?

Show the answer and reasoning

Router.

A router handles forwarding between networks, using network-layer addressing and routing information. A word processor is an application for editing documents and does not perform that role simply because it runs on a connected computer. The distinction is functional, so a definition should identify what a component does rather than rely only on its familiar name.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating a browser and the internet as the same component.
  • Assuming local connectivity proves an external service is reachable.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Draw a local network and its router.

  2. Label the browser as an application.

  3. Explain name lookup separately from website response.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
