01 / UNDERSTANDING
Learning objectives
Practise thesis construction, paragraph coherence, evidence handling and formal-letter purpose as transferable skills rather than assuming a fixed official task list. Separate an essay's defensible thesis from a letter's requested action. Your practical tasks are to underline audience, purpose, format and scope before outlining and give each paragraph one claim supported by a concrete example. These conceptual objectives are a study framework, not an official question allocation. Demonstrate the distinction with a fresh worked case, including the assumptions that make the answer valid.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Descriptive writing demonstrates clear thought through relevant arguments, organised paragraphs and accurate language. Strong responses address the actual task, explain a small number of developed points and finish with a practical, proportionate conclusion. An essay needs a defensible thesis and connected reasoning; a formal letter needs a clear purpose, relevant facts and an actionable request for its reader.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
An original letter task asks a branch manager to improve support for first-time digital users. A useful opening identifies the observed difficulty, such as confusion between payment and receipt screens. The body proposes a supervised demonstration and a short safety checklist. The closing requests a convenient session instead of demanding an unsupported guarantee of fraud-free banking.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Which request is clearer: "do the needful" or "schedule a supervised digital-safety demonstration for new users"?
Show the answer and reasoning
The request to schedule a supervised digital-safety demonstration.
The second request identifies an action, an audience and a purpose that the reader can evaluate. The vague phrase does not specify what outcome is wanted. A good letter also supplies relevant context and remains courteous, without pretending that one demonstration can remove every financial or technological risk.
Two traps to watch for.
- Writing a memorised essay that only loosely matches the prompt.
- Making factual claims or guarantees that the response cannot support.
