Topic guide: Puzzle arrangements: positions, blocks and cases

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover linear and circular positions, adjacency, fixed gaps and uncertainty, with explicit practice distinguishing a possible answer from a necessary answer. Practise a fixed block beside an exclusion rather than clues in isolation. Your practical tasks are to draw numbered seats and state the viewing convention and turn adjacency clues into blocks before placing isolated people. These conceptual objectives are a study framework, not an official question allocation. Demonstrate the distinction with a fresh worked case, including the assumptions that make the answer valid.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Arrangement puzzles translate verbal conditions into a finite model of positions and relationships. A dependable solution records orientation, fixed places, adjacent blocks and exclusions before testing whether every clue can hold together. Place the most restrictive block first, branch only when necessary, and reject a branch immediately when a clue fails. Maintain one consistent left-to-right convention.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Four colleagues A, B, C and D occupy seats numbered one to four from left to right. A is immediately left of B, C occupies an end, and D is not at an end. A is also left of D. Treat AB as a block. Testing its possible starts leaves the order A, B, D, C; every rejected start violates an end condition.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

In the stated four-seat arrangement, who occupies seat three?

Show the answer and reasoning

D.

AB cannot start at seat two because only end seats would remain for D. Starting AB at seat three would place A to the right of D, contradicting their stated order. With AB at seats one and two, D occupies seat three and C the remaining end.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Reversing left and right after changing the viewing direction.
  • Accepting one valid case without checking whether the answer is invariant.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Draw numbered seats and state the viewing convention.

  2. Turn adjacency clues into blocks before placing isolated people.

  3. Check every clue against each surviving full arrangement.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
