BANKERS TUTORIAL · JAIIB · TOPIC & REVISION GUIDE

Topic guide: Balance of payments and external transactions

The balance of payments organises transactions between residents and non-residents. Separating trade, income, transfers and financial flows helps explain external financing without confusing an export receipt with every type of foreign inflow.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover residency, goods and services, income, transfers and financial claims. The objective is to classify simple cross-border transactions and explain why similar currency movements can have different economic meanings. Use transaction cards for an export, a family transfer and an equity subscription. Classify the economic purpose before introducing account headings, then ask what claim or payment corresponds to each. This makes the organising principle visible without depending on memorised labels alone.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

External accounts classify transactions according to their economic nature and residency basis. Goods and services trade, income and transfers differ from financial transactions involving assets and liabilities. A double-entry framework links the transaction with a corresponding financing or accounting entry.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

A resident software firm receives payment for services from an overseas client, while a resident company receives an equity investment from a non-resident. Both bring foreign funds, but the economic transactions belong in different analytical categories. The learner labels the service receipt separately from the change in financial ownership.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Are an export-service receipt and a foreign equity investment the same type of external transaction?

Show the answer and reasoning

No.

The service receipt pays for current production supplied across the residency boundary, whereas equity investment changes a financial ownership claim. Both can involve foreign funds, but their economic nature differs. Classification should follow the transaction and counterparties rather than treating all incoming foreign currency as export earnings.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Classifying every foreign inflow as an export receipt.
  • Treating currency denomination as identical to residency classification.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Identify resident and non-resident parties in both transactions.

  2. Separate the service sale from the equity ownership change.

  3. Explain what each transaction finances or compensates.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
