Topic guide: Ratios, shares and proportional allocation

Turn ratios into actual shares by finding the total number of parts, and distinguish a ratio between groups from a fraction of the combined total in allocation problems.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Study equivalent ratios, total-part allocation and linked ratios. Aim to translate words into a part diagram before using algebra or shortcut cross-multiplication in more complicated cases.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A ratio compares quantities using a common scale. In a split of 2:3, the combined total has five equal parts, so the groups receive two fifths and three fifths. The ratio 2:3 does not mean that the first group receives two thirds of the entire total.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. Two training teams share 150 practice booklets in the ratio 2:3. Five parts represent 150, so one part is 30 and the teams receive 60 and 90. If team membership changes, the old ratio cannot automatically be retained: the problem must state whether allocation still follows the original ratio or a new rule.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Divide ₹560 in the ratio 3:4. What is the smaller share?

Show the answer and reasoning

₹240.

The total number of parts is 3 + 4 = 7. Each part is ₹560 ÷ 7 = ₹80, and the smaller group receives three parts, or ₹240. The other share is ₹320. Adding the shares verifies the total, while 240:320 simplifies back to the required 3:4.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Using one group’s parts as the combined denominator.
  • Combining two ratios without equalising their common term.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Write the total number of parts.

  2. Find one part before finding shares.

  3. Check the reconstructed ratio and total.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
