Study plan: Loan comparisons: total cost, timing and disclosed terms

Comparing loans requires looking beyond a headline rate to the amount received, repayment schedule and disclosed charges. A transparent educational comparison states which cash flows are included and avoids treating the lowest instalment as automatically cheapest.

Plan your preparation

Build a two-offer cash-flow table before attempting annualised-cost calculations or discussing product suitability. Build a complete cash-flow table before discussing an annualised cost measure. For a later review, read current official disclosures for omitted terms. Keep a specific error note about comparing instalments without checking tenure and charges. Use a changed example after a short gap so that remembering one answer does not disguise a remaining misunderstanding.

The concept in context

Comparing loans requires looking beyond a headline rate to the amount received, repayment schedule and disclosed charges. A transparent educational comparison states which cash flows are included and avoids treating the lowest instalment as automatically cheapest. Add comparable stated repayments and charges, then examine whether tenure and the amount received are equivalent.

A worked learning case

Two fictional offers each provide 10,000. Offer A requires ten repayments of 1,080 and a stated upfront charge of 100; offer B requires ten repayments of 1,090 with no stated charge. Their listed total outflows are both 10,900. The identical totals do not prove every term is equivalent, because payment timing and other conditions still need comparison.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

What is the stated total outflow under offer A?

Show the answer and reasoning

10,900 units.

Ten repayments of 1,080 sum to 10,800. Adding the stated upfront charge of 100 gives 10,900. This total includes only the cash flows provided in the exercise. It does not establish an annualised rate or determine which offer suits a person, because timing, disclosures and other contractual conditions remain relevant.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Comparing instalments without checking tenure and charges.
  • Calling equal total outflows identical loan contracts.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. List amount received and every stated outflow.

  2. Align tenure and payment dates before comparison.

  3. Read current official disclosures for omitted terms.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
