Study plan: Input-output reasoning: infer and verify transformations

Input-output reasoning reconstructs a sequence of sorting or transformation steps from examples. The objective is to infer a rule that explains every displayed step, then apply it consistently to an unfamiliar input.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Plan your preparation

Build a small rule notebook containing a verified transition and a counterexample for each inference that previously caused confusion. Use duplicate-sized numbers only after deciding how ties will be treated. For a later review, reapply the verified operation to a new mixed sequence. Keep a specific error note about inferring alphabetical priority from only one moved word. Use a changed example after a short gap so that remembering one answer does not disguise a remaining misunderstanding.

The concept in context

Input-output reasoning reconstructs a sequence of sorting or transformation steps from examples. The objective is to infer a rule that explains every displayed step, then apply it consistently to an unfamiliar input. Identify what becomes fixed at each stage, whether relative order is preserved, and whether numbers and words follow separate priorities.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

An invented machine repeatedly moves the smallest remaining number to the next unfilled position on the left, preserving the relative order of other entries. For input 42, 15, 31, 8, step one is 8, 42, 15, 31. Step two becomes 8, 15, 42, 31. The final placement sorts the remaining pair.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Under the stated machine rule, what is step three?

Show the answer and reasoning

8, 15, 31, 42.

After two steps, 8 and 15 are fixed. Of the remaining values, 31 is smaller than 42, so it moves into the third position while 42 shifts right. The operation fixes one additional position; it does not apply an unrelated swap rule to the entire sequence.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Inferring alphabetical priority from only one moved word.
  • Counting an unchanged display as a required extra transformation.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Mark the prefix or suffix fixed after each displayed step.

  2. Test the tentative rule on every transition before proceeding.

  3. Reapply the verified operation to a new mixed sequence.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
