01 / UNDERSTANDING
Understand the idea
Use code puzzles to discuss the difference between recognising a pattern and proving a correspondence when several explanations fit limited observations. Small evidence additions can resolve one ambiguity while leaving another untouched. Contrast this with the error of treating an unresolved pair of codes as a unique mapping. In a practical demonstration, test the mapping against a statement not used initially. Ask the reader to name the controlling fact and explain what additional information would be needed in a different situation, rather than only repeating terminology.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Coding-decoding problems ask learners to identify substitutions, ordering rules or symbol relationships from stated evidence. A sound mapping must explain shared and differing elements without assuming an arbitrary language or hidden convention. Compare overlapping statements, isolate their intersections and record unresolved pairings. Letter-position rules require checking every character rather than matching only the first letter.
A shared code identifies a shared word only when the supplied statements make that correspondence unique. An unresolved pair should remain a pair until more evidence arrives. A useful study check is to list the shared words and shared codes for each pair, then test the mapping against a statement not used initially. Explain why the method fits.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
In an original code, "save money daily" is "ka tu mi" and "save time daily" is "ka lo mi". A third statement, "daily practice helps", is "mi sa re". The first two statements leave save and daily unresolved between ka and mi. The third isolates daily as mi, so save must be ka.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Which code represents money in the stated example?
Show the answer and reasoning
tu.
The first and second statements share save and daily, represented by ka and mi in some order. Money appears only in the first of those statements, so its unmatched code is tu. The third statement resolves daily separately but is unnecessary for identifying the word money.
Two traps to watch for.
- Assigning each word to the code in the same displayed position.
- Treating an unresolved pair of codes as a unique mapping.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Turn understanding into practice
List the shared words and shared codes for each pair.
Separate confirmed mappings from unresolved alternatives in the table.
Test the mapping against a statement not used initially.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
