Suitability, consent and ethical cross-selling

Ethical selling begins with the customer's need and a clear explanation of the proposed product. Suitability, informed consent and accurate disclosures help distinguish a helpful recommendation from pressure driven only by sales targets.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Understand the idea

Tell the story of a medical reserve and an unsuitable long-horizon pitch. Show how a manager protects informed choice by bringing the conversation back to purpose, access and understood conditions. Let the manager explain why declining an unsuitable sale can be the correct service outcome. Show the customer's need, the product's relevant trade-offs and the recorded rationale, so ethical conduct becomes a practical sequence of decisions rather than an abstract statement that staff should be honest.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A product can be legitimate yet unsuitable for a particular customer's objective, time horizon or tolerance for uncertainty. Staff should understand the need, explain material features and confirm the customer's choice. Product availability at the branch does not by itself establish that the customer needs it.

Targets can create tension between short-term sales and long-term trust. An ethical response keeps consent meaningful, avoids misleading bundling and records the rationale accurately. Where specific sales rules apply, the current product framework and institutional procedure should guide the decision rather than an assumed general exemption.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

A customer wants easy access to funds for medical costs. A salesperson proposes a long-horizon product without explaining exit conditions. The branch manager redirects the discussion to the customer's liquidity need, explains relevant features and ensures that any product decision is voluntary and based on a clear understanding of the trade-offs.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Is a product suitable merely because the bank is authorised to distribute it?

Show the answer and reasoning

No.

Distribution authority concerns whether the product can be offered through that channel; suitability concerns whether its features fit this customer's needs and circumstances. The recommendation should consider objectives, access requirements and relevant risks. Clear explanation and voluntary informed choice are necessary parts of an ethical sales conversation.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating sales authority as proof of customer suitability.
  • Making a customer's unrelated service appear conditional on buying a product.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Turn understanding into practice

  1. Identify the medical fund's purpose and access requirement.

  2. Compare the proposed product's exit conditions with that need.

  3. Explain the voluntary choice and record the recommendation's rationale.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
