01 / UNDERSTANDING

Understand the idea

A small mark above qualifying tokens can save a long recount. The technique separates selection from position, making a visually busy line into a straightforward ordered list.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

An alphanumeric series combines different token types in one sequence. First identify what the question calls a letter, digit or symbol, then apply positional conditions exactly. The third digit from the right refers to the order of qualifying digits, which may differ from the third token from the right in the complete sequence.

Conditions involving preceding and following tokens need a clear boundary rule. End tokens may lack a neighbour on one side, and removing selected tokens changes later positions. Write the filtered series when a question requires deletion or rearrangement, because continuing to count on the original line can silently produce the wrong answer.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In the original sequence A 4 # B 7 C 2 %, the digits from the right are 2, 7 and 4. The second digit from the right is 7, while the second token from the right is 2. Deleting all symbols gives A 4 B 7 C 2, which has a new six-token position structure.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: In M 8 @ N 3 P 6 &, which is the second digit from the right?

Show the answer and reasoning

3.

Ignore letters and symbols for the requested digit count. Reading qualifying digits from the right gives 6 first, 3 second and 8 third. Therefore the answer is 3. Counting all tokens would answer a different positional question, so filtering by token type must happen before assigning the requested rank.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Counting all tokens when only digits are requested.
  • Using original positions after deleting or rearranging tokens.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Turn understanding into practice

  1. Mark the qualifying token type.

  2. Write a filtered sequence if required.

  3. Count from the specified end only.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
