This guide explains a topic and a method for reading related news. It does not report a newly announced event. Check the issuing authority for current facts.
01 / UNDERSTANDING
Reading the news
Read lending-growth stories alongside borrower cash flows and credit quality. A larger sanctioned amount does not by itself establish that a household or enterprise can sustain repayments. Separate the amount sanctioned from the amount used and the repayments actually supported by cash generation. Where a report omits those distinctions, avoid inferring borrower resilience. Compare growth claims with evidence about business purpose, obligations and collection quality.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
A repayment schedule should reflect the expected timing of usable cash, allowing for reasonable adverse conditions. Security can support recovery if repayment fails, but realising security may take effort and time. The primary analysis therefore remains the borrower's sustainable source of repayment.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
A tailor requests finance for a sewing machine. Festival sales are strong, but monthly income varies and an existing loan already consumes cash. The officer prepares a realistic cash budget, checks obligations and tests a quieter sales period before deciding whether the proposed instalment structure is supportable.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Can adequate collateral replace analysis of repayment capacity?
Show the answer and reasoning
No.
Collateral provides a potential secondary recovery source; it does not generate the regular cash needed for scheduled repayments. The lender still needs to understand income, expenses, existing commitments and variability. A sound proposal links the borrowing purpose, cash generation and repayment arrangement before relying on security.
Two traps to watch for.
- Treating an asset valuation as proof of instalment affordability.
- Using peak-season sales as the normal monthly cash assumption.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Evidence to check
Identify the tailor's primary source of repayment.
Build a monthly cash budget including existing debt.
Test affordability during a realistic lower-sales period.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
