Reading the news: Fractions, decimals and mental benchmarks

Convert familiar fractions into decimals and percentages, use benchmark values to compare quantities and keep the whole-number base visible when a fractional share must be turned into an amount.

This guide explains a topic and a method for reading related news. It does not report a newly announced event. Check the issuing authority for current facts.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Reading the news

When a report describes a fraction of customers or transactions, find the total population. Converting the share can help interpretation, but an absolute count needs the appropriate base and period.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Comparisons may use common denominators or cross-products when denominators are positive. Avoid rounding so early that close fractions become indistinguishable. Negative values require particular care because intuition based only on numerator size can fail. For ordinary positive share questions, estimate the fraction’s position between zero and one before computing the exact amount.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original practice plan assigns three eighths of 160 questions to arithmetic. One eighth is 20, so three eighths is 60. The fraction equals 0.375 or 37.5%. Writing the base of 160 prevents the learner from treating 37.5% as a fixed number of questions independent of the total workload.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: What percentage is 3/8?

Show the answer and reasoning

37.5%.

Divide 3 by 8 to obtain 0.375, then multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. Alternatively, one eighth is 12.5%, so three eighths is 37.5%. The result is below one half, or 50%, which is a quick benchmark confirming that the decimal has been placed sensibly.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating a fraction’s percentage as an absolute quantity.
  • Rounding close fractions before deciding which is larger.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Evidence to check

  1. Recall halves, quarters and eighths.

  2. Convert one fraction three ways.

  3. Check each amount against its named base.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
