Study plan: Fractions, decimals and mental benchmarks

Convert familiar fractions into decimals and percentages, use benchmark values to compare quantities and keep the whole-number base visible when a fractional share must be turned into an amount.

Plan your preparation

Use brief retrieval practice before quantitative study, mixing conversions with actual share questions. Revisit weak fractions in fresh totals so recall transfers beyond a single familiar example.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A fraction represents a part relative to its denominator. Dividing numerator by denominator produces the decimal, and multiplying that decimal by 100 produces the percentage. Familiar benchmarks such as one half, one quarter and one eighth help check arithmetic, but a fraction becomes an actual quantity only when its base is known.

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original practice plan assigns three eighths of 160 questions to arithmetic. One eighth is 20, so three eighths is 60. The fraction equals 0.375 or 37.5%. Writing the base of 160 prevents the learner from treating 37.5% as a fixed number of questions independent of the total workload.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: What percentage is 3/8?

Show the answer and reasoning

37.5%.

Divide 3 by 8 to obtain 0.375, then multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. Alternatively, one eighth is 12.5%, so three eighths is 37.5%. The result is below one half, or 50%, which is a quick benchmark confirming that the decimal has been placed sensibly.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating a fraction’s percentage as an absolute quantity.
  • Rounding close fractions before deciding which is larger.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Recall halves, quarters and eighths.

  2. Convert one fraction three ways.

  3. Check each amount against its named base.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
