The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Use an original two-bank netting question with explicit eligibility assumptions. Ask for gross value and net funding separately so the learner cannot substitute one measure for another.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A net amount can be smaller than the total value of payments, but that arithmetic does not make all systems equally safe or equally fast. Timing, finality, participant risk and liquidity arrangements matter together. In RTGS, the RBI explains settlement in its books as final and irrevocable, a system-specific point that should not be generalised indiscriminately.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. Bank A owes Bank B ₹9 lakh and Bank B owes Bank A ₹6 lakh in an illustrative eligible bilateral netting arrangement. The net obligation is ₹3 lakh from A to B, although the two payment values total ₹15 lakh. This example demonstrates offsetting only; it does not describe every real payment system’s rules or risk protections.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: In the stated bilateral netting example, A owes B ₹12 lakh and B owes A ₹8 lakh. What is the net obligation?

Show the answer and reasoning

₹4 lakh from A to B.

Offset the opposing obligations: ₹12 lakh minus ₹8 lakh leaves ₹4 lakh payable by A. The gross payment values total ₹20 lakh, which is a different measure. The result depends on the example’s eligible netting assumption and should not be used to infer how an unspecified real payment system settles.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating a sent instruction as proof of final settlement.
  • Equating a net obligation with the sum of payment values.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Define message, clearing and settlement separately.

  2. Compute both gross total and net obligation.

  3. Check a named system’s official finality description.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
