Practice & review: Bar graphs and scale-aware comparison

Extract bar values from labelled axes, compare differences and ratios and recognise how a truncated axis can exaggerate a visual change without changing the underlying numerical data.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Create original graphs from a checked table and show the same values with two axis ranges. Ask why the apparent drama changes while the numerical percentage remains fixed.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Grouped bars require matching categories and periods carefully. Stacked bars distinguish segment amounts from the overall total, and overlapping categories may not be safely added. A truncated axis can make modest numerical differences look dramatic. Check values directly, then explain what the display emphasises without claiming that a visual choice changes the underlying data.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original chart shows two service counts of 100 and 110. The numerical increase is ten, or 10% of the first count. If the displayed axis begins at 95, the visible bar extensions are five and fifteen units, making the second appear three times as tall above the baseline. The counts themselves have not tripled.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Bars show 80 and 100 units for successive periods. What is the percentage increase from the first?

Show the answer and reasoning

25%.

The increase is 100 − 80 = 20 units. Divide by the original 80 and multiply by 100 to obtain 25%. The graph’s drawing height is not a substitute for those values, especially if the axis is truncated or the display has been resized. The specified first period fixes the comparison base.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Estimating percentage growth from apparent bar-height ratios alone.
  • Mixing a stacked segment with the whole-bar total.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Read axis origin, scale and units.

  2. Extract values before calculating.

  3. State the denominator for each comparison.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
