Practice & review: Phrasal verbs and local meaning

Interpret common verb-particle combinations from context, distinguish their idiomatic meaning from the verb alone and select a replacement that preserves both the action and the sentence’s grammatical structure.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

Review the question

Create original pairs using the same verb-particle words literally and idiomatically. Ask for a replacement in each, making context the decisive evidence rather than recognition of a memorised phrase.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

One combination can have multiple senses across contexts. Carry out an instruction means perform it, while carry out a box may refer to physically moving an object outside. Record short original sentences and compare meanings rather than memorising one translation for every occurrence. Grammatical placement matters too, especially when a pronoun acts as the object.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In the original sentence The team carried out the verification, carried out means performed. In The worker carried the box out, the words describe physical movement. A learner who sees only carry as transport may misread the first sentence, while a learner who memorises only perform may misread the second. Context identifies the relevant action.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: In Please look into the complaint, what does look into mean?

Show the answer and reasoning

Investigate or examine.

The sentence asks for an examination of the complaint, so investigate captures the intended action. It does not ask someone to visually look inside a physical object. The object complaint and the request context select the idiomatic sense. A replacement should preserve that meaning rather than translate look and into separately.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Translating the verb and particle independently in an idiomatic phrase.
  • Using one memorised sense in every context.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Identify the action described.

  2. Substitute a plain-language meaning.

  3. Compare a literal and an idiomatic example.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
