Topic guide: Phrasal verbs and local meaning

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover contextual meaning, object placement and multiple senses of common combinations. The objective is accurate interpretation in a sentence rather than collecting a long undifferentiated list of particles.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A phrasal verb combines a verb with a particle such as up, out or off. The combination can carry a meaning not predictable from the verb alone. Work out what action the sentence describes before selecting a synonym, and check whether the phrase takes an object or allows the object to appear between its parts.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In the original sentence The team carried out the verification, carried out means performed. In The worker carried the box out, the words describe physical movement. A learner who sees only carry as transport may misread the first sentence, while a learner who memorises only perform may misread the second. Context identifies the relevant action.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: In Please look into the complaint, what does look into mean?

Show the answer and reasoning

Investigate or examine.

The sentence asks for an examination of the complaint, so investigate captures the intended action. It does not ask someone to visually look inside a physical object. The object complaint and the request context select the idiomatic sense. A replacement should preserve that meaning rather than translate look and into separately.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Translating the verb and particle independently in an idiomatic phrase.
  • Using one memorised sense in every context.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Identify the action described.

  2. Substitute a plain-language meaning.

  3. Compare a literal and an idiomatic example.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
