Learning objectives

Cover cause, result, contrast, concession and addition alongside sentence structure. The objective is a connector choice that preserves meaning, certainty and the relationship between the supplied clauses.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A connector expresses how two ideas relate. Because introduces a reason, therefore signals a result, and however often marks contrast. Read both clauses before selecting the join, then state their relationship in ordinary words. A grammatically possible connector can still change the meaning or imply a causal link the text does not support.

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In an original example, The server was unavailable; therefore, users could not submit the form states a consequence. The form was complex; however, users completed it successfully states contrast. Swapping the connectors would change the relationship, even if a reader could invent extra circumstances to make the new version imaginable. The supplied text should guide the choice.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Choose the connector: Although the queue was long, the staff remained calm. Does although introduce contrast/concession or a simple result?

Show the answer and reasoning

Contrast or concession.

The first clause presents a circumstance that might make calm behaviour unexpected, while the second says calm behaviour continued. Although marks that concession. It does not claim that a long queue caused the calm response. Naming the relationship before selecting a connector prevents grammatical familiarity from replacing the intended meaning.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Adding a causal connector when the text gives only sequence.
  • Choosing by punctuation while ignoring the relationship between ideas.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Paraphrase the relation in ordinary words.

  2. Check the required clause structure.

  3. Read the completed sentence for unchanged meaning.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
