Practice & review: Pie charts, angles and totals

Convert a pie-chart sector into a share using 360 degrees, recover category values from a supplied total and recognise why charts with different totals cannot be compared by angle alone.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Build original charts from a numerical table so every angle can be checked. Ask both largest-share and largest-amount questions to show when the rankings do and do not coincide.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Sector size shows a relative share, not an absolute amount independent of the total. A smaller slice in a much larger pie can represent more units than a larger slice in a smaller pie. Read each chart’s base separately and verify whether categories exhaust the whole before combining information across charts.

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In an original expenditure chart with a total of ₹72,000, a 90-degree sector represents one quarter, or ₹18,000. A second chart totals ₹1,20,000 and has a 72-degree sector worth ₹24,000. The second sector has a smaller angle but a larger amount because its overall base is greater.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: A 60-degree sector belongs to a pie representing 900 items. How many items does it represent?

Show the answer and reasoning

150 items.

The sector is 60/360, or one sixth, of the complete circle. One sixth of 900 is 150. Using 60 as a percentage would incorrectly treat an angle measurement as a percent share. The calculation requires both the sector angle and the total represented by the full pie.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating degrees as if they were percentages.
  • Comparing sector amounts across charts without checking totals.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Convert each sector into a fraction.

  2. Write the full-pie total beside the chart.

  3. Check whether all category amounts sum correctly.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
