Practice & review: Tables, totals and denominator discipline

Read a numerical table by its headings and units, compute totals and growth comparisons and distinguish a row’s share of a total from its change across reporting periods.

The worked question on this page is original educational practice. It is not represented as a question from an official previous-year examination paper.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Review the question

Create an original two-period table and ask separate share and growth questions about the same category. Require the denominator in each solution to expose accidental substitution.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Check whether categories overlap and whether totals include all relevant groups. A table of amounts in thousands cannot be compared directly with one stated in individual units without conversion. Use a small extraction note for multi-step questions so repeated reading does not cause a later calculation to borrow a figure from the wrong year.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original training table lists Team A with 40 completions in June and 50 in July, and Team B with 60 and 70. July totals 120. A’s July share is 50/120, while its growth from June is 10/40 = 25%. The numerator 50 appears in both contexts but does not create the same denominator.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: A table shows July values of 30, 45 and 75. What percentage of the total is the category with value 45?

Show the answer and reasoning

30%.

Add all three July values to obtain a total of 150. Divide the selected category’s 45 by 150 and multiply by 100, giving 30%. Using only the other categories as a denominator would answer a comparison with the rest rather than the requested share of the complete total.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Using a prior-year value when the question asks total share.
  • Combining overlapping categories as if they were disjoint.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Learn from the attempt

  1. Read headings and units aloud.

  2. Mark the requested cells and denominator.

  3. Check totals before computing shares.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
