01 / UNDERSTANDING
Learning objectives
Cover strategic objectives, causal links, leading indicators, outcomes and guardrails. Build a small scorecard around one service goal, explaining why every measure belongs. The objective is to evaluate the strategy's logic and identify conflicting incentives, rather than create a long dashboard whose numbers have no clear connection to the institution's chosen direction.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Strategy explains where an institution intends to compete and how it expects to create value within its resources and constraints. A scorecard translates that logic into a limited set of connected measures. Financial outcomes alone may arrive too late to reveal weakening service, process defects or capability gaps that affect future performance.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
A fictional bank targets a simpler small-business lending experience. Its scorecard tracks turnaround, rework, customer understanding and sustainable contribution. When speed improves but incomplete applications and complaints rise, management reviews the process rather than celebrating the time measure alone. The revised discussion asks whether the strategy is delivering the intended customer and financial results together.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Why should faster processing be reviewed alongside rework and customer measures?
Show the answer and reasoning
Speed can improve while accuracy or the customer experience deteriorates.
A process indicator describes one part of performance and cannot by itself establish the intended strategic outcome. Rework, complaints or misunderstanding may reveal costs shifted to later stages or to customers. Reviewing related measures tests whether the faster process creates durable value under the strategy's stated quality and conduct objectives.
Two traps to watch for.
- Choosing numerous available metrics without a strategic reason.
- Treating a leading indicator as proven evidence of the final outcome.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Your revision map
Write the proposed causal link from capability to customer outcome.
Choose one guardrail for a processing-speed target.
Explain what evidence would challenge the strategy's assumptions.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
