01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Study identification, relationship purpose, risk-based due diligence and ongoing review. The objective is to explain why documents and transaction context support different parts of customer understanding.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Customer due diligence helps a bank establish who its customer is and understand the nature of the relationship. Identity verification is one component. The expected purpose of an account and the customer’s business provide context for assessing whether later activity is consistent with what the bank reasonably understands.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. A local stationery trader opens a business account and describes mainly domestic school supplies. Later, activity changes to frequent receipts from unrelated overseas firms. Staff should seek an appropriate explanation through approved procedures and update their understanding where justified. A valid identity document does not by itself explain the changed commercial pattern or make every transaction consistent.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Does successful identity verification at account opening remove the need to understand later unusual account activity?

Show the answer and reasoning

No. Ongoing understanding and review remain important.

Identity and transaction context answer different questions. The first establishes who the customer is; the second considers whether activity fits the relationship and risk profile. An unexpected pattern may have a legitimate explanation, but it still needs appropriate assessment through current procedures rather than an automatic assumption either of innocence or wrongdoing.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Treating KYC as a one-time photocopy collection exercise.
  • Calling unusual activity criminal without an appropriate assessment.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Separate identity, purpose and expected activity.

  2. Write one legitimate reason for a changed pattern.

  3. Check the latest official direction before procedural use.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
