Topic guide: Data interpretation case studies: reconstruct the table

Caselet data interpretation converts a narrative of totals, shares and constraints into a structured table. The first task is establishing a consistent base before calculating ratios, averages or changes from the reconstructed figures.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover caselet tables, weighted percentages, complementary shares and residual values, with particular attention to units and whether categories overlap. Practise residual cells and weighted totals in the same small table. Your practical tasks are to draw a table with clearly named rows, columns and totals and annotate each percentage with its exact base before multiplying. These conceptual objectives are a study framework, not an official question allocation. Demonstrate the distinction with a fresh worked case, including the assumptions that make the answer valid.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Caselet data interpretation converts a narrative of totals, shares and constraints into a structured table. The first task is establishing a consistent base before calculating ratios, averages or changes from the reconstructed figures. Define rows and columns, enter explicit values first, then use row and column totals to recover missing cells without counting any category twice.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Two branches process 200 applications altogether. North handles 120, of which one quarter are incomplete. South handles the remaining 80, of which one fifth are incomplete. The reconstructed table contains 30 and 16 incomplete applications, leaving 90 and 64 complete applications. The combined complete count is 154, not the average of the two branch percentages.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

What percentage of all 200 applications is complete?

Show the answer and reasoning

77%.

North contributes 120 minus 30, or 90 complete applications. South contributes 80 minus 16, or 64. Their total is 154, so the combined percentage is 154 divided by 200 times 100, equal to 77%. A simple mean of the branch percentages would ignore their unequal sizes.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Averaging branch percentages when the underlying branch counts differ.
  • Using a residual total before accounting for every stated category.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Draw a table with clearly named rows, columns and totals.

  2. Annotate each percentage with its exact base before multiplying.

  3. Reconcile all subtotals with the narrative before answering comparisons.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
