Topic guide: Nominal and real GDP: prices versus production

Nominal GDP values output using current prices, while real GDP aims to isolate changes in production using a price-adjustment framework. A higher money value can reflect prices, quantities or a combination of both.

Learning objectives

Cover nominal values, volume changes, price adjustment and simple growth decomposition without claiming classroom arithmetic replicates national accounts. Use a common-price calculation to isolate output changes in a one-product economy. Your practical tasks are to separate product prices from production quantities and value both quantities at a common price. These conceptual objectives are a study framework, not an official question allocation. Demonstrate the distinction with a fresh worked case, including the assumptions that make the answer valid.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Nominal GDP values output using current prices, while real GDP aims to isolate changes in production using a price-adjustment framework. A higher money value can reflect prices, quantities or a combination of both. In a simplified single-product economy, compare quantity at unchanged prices before interpreting the change in current-price value.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

A fictional economy produces 100 units at a price of 10, then 105 units at a price of 12. Nominal output rises from 1,000 to 1,260, a 26% increase. Valuing the second quantity at the original price gives 1,050, showing 5% quantity growth in this simplified exercise. The remaining difference reflects the price change and interaction.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

What is the illustrative real output growth at the original price?

Show the answer and reasoning

5%.

At the original price, output value rises from 100 times 10 to 105 times 10, or from 1,000 to 1,050. The increase of 50 divided by 1,000 equals 5%. Using the current-price value of 1,260 instead would mix the quantity increase with the rise in the product’s price.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Calling all current-price GDP growth an increase in production.
  • Mixing base-price and current-price quantities within one comparison.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Separate product prices from production quantities.

  2. Value both quantities at a common price.

  3. Label nominal and real growth explicitly.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
