Learning objectives
Cover accuracy, time allocation, error classification and fresh retesting. The objective is a repeatable review process, with actual exam stages and scoring confirmed from the applicable official instructions.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
A mock is a measurement opportunity when its conditions and scoring are explicit. Record correct, incorrect and skipped responses, alongside time spent where available. Separate concept errors, reading errors, calculation slips and poor question selection. The same overall score can conceal very different weaknesses that need different follow-up work.

A worked learning case
Original educational case. In an original twenty-question practice set, a learner gets twelve correct, four incorrect and leaves four blank. Under a stated practice rule of +1 and −0.25, the score is 11. Three wrong answers came from misreading bases, so the next session focuses on denominator choice rather than merely trying to attempt more questions faster.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Original practice: Under an explicitly stated practice rule of +1 correct and −0.25 incorrect, what score comes from 16 correct and 4 incorrect?
Show the answer and reasoning
15 marks.
The correct responses contribute 16 marks. Four incorrect responses deduct 4 × 0.25 = 1 mark, leaving 15. This arithmetic applies to the stated original practice rule only. Actual examination scoring must be checked in the relevant official notification or handout rather than assumed from the example.
Two traps to watch for.
- Judging progress by attempts while ignoring accuracy and time.
- Using a remembered marking scheme for a different current examination.
