01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Study contextual synonyms, antonyms, word forms and tone strength. The objective is a replacement that fits the sentence’s meaning and grammar without making the author’s claim broader or harsher.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Many words have several meanings. Context determines which sense is active in a passage, so a memorised synonym may fail in a banking or business sentence. Look at the subject, nearby contrasts and the action described. Then substitute a candidate meaning and reread the whole sentence to check whether the intended claim survives.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In the original sentence The bank aims to address customer concerns, address means deal with, not write a postal location. In Please verify the customer’s address, the word instead names location information. The spelling is identical, but the surrounding grammar and purpose identify the appropriate sense. A word list that stores only one meaning would miss that distinction.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: In The manager adopted a prudent approach to lending, which is closer to prudent: cautious or careless?

Show the answer and reasoning

Cautious.

Prudent describes careful judgement with attention to consequences, making cautious the closer option in this sentence. Careless points in the opposite direction. The surrounding reference to an approach to lending supports a decision-making sense, rather than requiring a specialised technical definition or an unrelated meaning borrowed from another context.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Selecting the most familiar meaning despite incompatible context.
  • Replacing a word with a related term of the wrong grammatical form.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Guess the sense before reading options.

  2. Substitute each candidate in the full sentence.

  3. Write one contrasting context for the same word.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
