Study plan: Reading a liquidity maturity ladder

A liquidity maturity ladder arranges expected receipts and payments by time. Learn why a comfortable total balance can conceal an early cash shortage and why behavioural assumptions need evidence and regular challenge.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Plan your preparation

Start with a four-interval fictional ladder and calculate both gap measures. On a second pass, delay a loan receipt and increase early withdrawals. Keep an error log distinguishing sign mistakes from timing mistakes. You are ready to move on when you can explain the funding implication before reaching for a formula.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Liquidity management asks whether obligations can be met when they fall due, including during adverse conditions. A maturity ladder groups cash inflows and outflows into time intervals. The period gap and cumulative gap answer different questions about the timing and persistence of a possible funding need.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

In a fictional exercise, payments of 80 units occur before expected receipts of 100 units. The month as a whole has a surplus, but the opening interval still needs funding. The analyst adds a timing ladder, tests delayed collections and checks whether the proposed liquidity source is available before the first payment date.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Can a positive monthly cash total coexist with an earlier liquidity shortage?

Show the answer and reasoning

Yes, because receipts and payments can occur in a different sequence.

A monthly total compresses the timing of all flows into one number. An obligation due early cannot be met using a receipt arriving later unless a bridging resource is available. The ladder reveals that sequence, while cumulative gaps show whether subsequent receipts repair or prolong the initial shortage.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Offsetting a late receipt against an earlier payment without a bridge.
  • Treating every investment as immediately saleable at book value.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Construct period and cumulative gaps separately.

  2. Move one receipt to a later interval and recalculate.

  3. List evidence that a proposed liquidity source is accessible.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
