Plan your preparation

Practise a small reconciliation daily until signs follow from records rather than memory. Add overdraft cases only after favourable-balance examples can be explained without guesswork.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Bank reconciliation explains why two records of the same bank relationship differ at a stated date. Timing differences arise when one side records a transaction earlier. Errors and omitted charges are different: the business may need to correct its cash book before preparing the reconciliation.

A worked learning case

Original educational case. A business cash book shows a favourable balance of ₹20,000. A cheque for ₹3,000 has been issued but not presented, while a deposit of ₹5,000 is not yet credited by the bank. With no other differences, the statement balance is ₹18,000: start at ₹20,000, add ₹3,000 and subtract ₹5,000.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Cash book favourable balance is ₹12,000. An issued cheque of ₹2,000 remains unpresented. No other differences exist. What is the bank statement balance?

Show the answer and reasoning

₹14,000 favourable.

The business has already reduced its cash book for the cheque, but the bank has not yet debited the account. Its statement therefore shows ₹2,000 more. Adding the unpresented cheque to ₹12,000 produces ₹14,000; no new receipt has been earned by the business.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Adding every cheque difference without identifying its direction.
  • Leaving known bank charges out of the corrected cash book.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Label the starting balance and its sign.

  2. Separate timing items from book corrections.

  3. Reconcile one example in both directions.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
