Reading the news: Bank reconciliation with timing differences

Reconcile a cash book with a bank statement by distinguishing unpresented cheques, deposits awaiting credit and book entries that still need correction in business records.

This guide explains a topic and a method for reading related news. It does not report a newly announced event. Check the issuing authority for current facts.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Reading the news

News about faster cheque or deposit processing can be read through the timing gap between customer records and bank records, without assuming every mismatch indicates fraud.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Always state the starting record and whether its balance is favourable or overdrawn. Work through each item by asking what the bank statement already contains and what the cash book contains. A sign learned without that comparison is easily reversed when the question changes direction.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. A business cash book shows a favourable balance of ₹20,000. A cheque for ₹3,000 has been issued but not presented, while a deposit of ₹5,000 is not yet credited by the bank. With no other differences, the statement balance is ₹18,000: start at ₹20,000, add ₹3,000 and subtract ₹5,000.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Cash book favourable balance is ₹12,000. An issued cheque of ₹2,000 remains unpresented. No other differences exist. What is the bank statement balance?

Show the answer and reasoning

₹14,000 favourable.

The business has already reduced its cash book for the cheque, but the bank has not yet debited the account. Its statement therefore shows ₹2,000 more. Adding the unpresented cheque to ₹12,000 produces ₹14,000; no new receipt has been earned by the business.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Adding every cheque difference without identifying its direction.
  • Leaving known bank charges out of the corrected cash book.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Evidence to check

  1. Label the starting balance and its sign.

  2. Separate timing items from book corrections.

  3. Reconcile one example in both directions.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
