This guide explains a topic and a method for reading related news. It does not report a newly announced event. Check the issuing authority for current facts.
01 / UNDERSTANDING
Reading the news
For any earnings announcement, look for cash collection and capital expenditure context. A headline about higher profit does not establish that cash from customers rose equally.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Operating, investing and financing categories help explain the source and use of money. Read the cash flow statement alongside the balance sheet and income statement. A single negative cash figure needs context: investment in productive equipment is different from repeated inability to collect ordinary trade receivables.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
Original educational case. A service firm records ₹80,000 of sales but collects only ₹50,000 this month. It pays operating costs of ₹35,000 and buys equipment for ₹20,000. Operating cash inflow net of those costs is ₹15,000, while equipment spending brings the combined cash movement to minus ₹5,000 before financing. Reported sales alone cannot explain that movement.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Original practice: Is a new bank loan received by a trading business normally sales revenue or financing cash inflow?
Show the answer and reasoning
Financing cash inflow.
The loan changes cash and creates an obligation to repay. It is not consideration earned by selling goods or services, so treating it as sales would overstate operating performance. The distinction lets a reader see whether ordinary business activity generates cash or relies on outside funding.
Two traps to watch for.
- Treating borrowed cash as profit because the bank balance rises.
- Assuming all negative cash flow means the business is failing.

Reconcile opening cash with net cash movements.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
