Study plan: Currency quotes and conversion direction

Convert between foreign currency and rupees using explicitly stated exchange quotes, distinguish multiplication from division and recognise why buying and selling rates depend on the dealer’s viewpoint.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Plan your preparation

Practise two conversions in opposite directions within each session. Keep live-rate lookups separate from arithmetic drills so a convenient invented quote is never mistaken for financial information.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A currency quote states the value of one currency in units of another. If one dollar equals ₹80 in a practice example, dollars multiplied by 80 give rupees. Rupees divided by 80 give dollars. Writing units beside each figure makes conversion direction much clearer than memorising an unexplained operation.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. Using a purely hypothetical quote of ₹80 per dollar and ignoring fees, 250 dollars convert to ₹20,000. Conversely, ₹12,000 convert to 150 dollars at that same one-way quote. A learner writes dollars × rupees per dollar for the first calculation, allowing the dollar units to cancel and leaving rupees as the result.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: At a hypothetical rate of ₹75 per dollar, how many dollars equal ₹15,000, ignoring fees?

Show the answer and reasoning

200 dollars.

The quote gives rupees for one dollar, so divide rupees by rupees per dollar: 15,000 ÷ 75 = 200. Multiplying would produce the wrong unit direction. This is a stated practice conversion only; it does not represent a live rate or imply that actual buying and selling quotes are identical.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Multiplying rupees by a rupees-per-dollar quote to obtain dollars.
  • Reading the customer’s purchase as the dealer’s purchase.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Write the units of both currencies.

  2. Cancel units to decide multiplication or division.

  3. State whose buying or selling perspective applies.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
