Study plan: Family relations and viewpoint

Draw a family tree with generations and explicit gender information, trace relationships from the named viewpoint and resist filling missing details with assumptions about ordinary family arrangements.

Plan your preparation

Use short two-link relations before coded or longer narratives. Review every error by checking whether it came from generation, gender or reversal of the requested relationship.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Blood-relation questions encode a small family network. Begin with the person whose relation is asked, mark parents and children by generation and attach gender only when stated. A relation is directional: a person’s aunt sees that person as a niece or nephew, so the viewpoint must remain fixed.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In an original family, Meera is Arjun’s mother, and Kavya is Meera’s sister. Kavya is therefore Arjun’s maternal aunt. If Arjun’s gender were not specified, Kavya’s relation to Arjun would still be aunt, but Arjun’s relation back to Kavya could not be labelled nephew rather than niece merely from a name.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: R is the father of S. T is the sister of R. How is T related to S?

Show the answer and reasoning

Paternal aunt.

T is the sister of S’s father, which makes T the paternal aunt of S. T’s gender is supplied by sister, while S’s gender is unnecessary for this direction of the relationship. Beginning at S and moving first to the father and then to his sister keeps the viewpoint consistent throughout.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Inferring gender solely from a person’s name.
  • Answering the inverse relation instead of the requested viewpoint.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Build your next study session

  1. Mark the question’s reference person.

  2. Place each generation on a separate level.

  3. Leave unstated gender or links unresolved.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
