Study plan: Floor puzzles and fixed reference levels

Place people on explicitly numbered floors, translate above and below into ordered positions and distinguish adjacent floors from floors separated by a stated number of intervening levels.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Plan your preparation

Begin with four-floor cases and gradually add exclusions. Track how many alternative placements remain after each clue rather than measuring progress only by whether the last grid is full.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A floor puzzle is a one-dimensional arrangement with a fixed vertical order. State whether floor one is the lowest, then translate every clue into a position or relation. Immediately above means one level higher; two floors between means a difference of three floor numbers. These phrases should not be treated as interchangeable.

A worked learning case

Original educational case. In an original four-floor building numbered upward from one, A lives on floor four and B immediately below A. B therefore occupies three. If C is on floor one, D must occupy two. There is one floor between C and B, while A and B have no intervening floor. The distinction follows from positions rather than a memorised phrase.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Floor one is lowest. A is on floor 2, with two floors strictly between A and B above. What floor is B on?

Show the answer and reasoning

Floor 5.

The floors between are three and four, so B occupies floor five. Numerically, two intervening floors require a gap of three: 2 + 2 + 1 = 5. Adding only the number between would put B on floor four and leave just one intervening floor, contradicting the clue’s wording.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Adding the intervening count without the final endpoint step.
  • Treating an unresolved relative block as a fixed placement.

  1. Write the floor-numbering convention.

  2. Convert each clue into a gap or position.

  3. Check every clue after completing the grid.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
