01 / UNDERSTANDING
Learning objectives
Study capacity, appetite, tolerance, indicators and escalation through one growth decision. The objective is to translate a qualitative intention into observable information and an accountable response. Explain why a measure can support management while still needing review for blind spots, changing business conditions or incentives that encourage teams to work around its definition.
02 / UNDERSTANDING
The concept in context
Risk capacity, appetite and limits answer related but different questions. Capacity concerns the resources and constraints that determine how much risk can be borne; appetite expresses the chosen willingness within that setting. Operational limits translate the chosen position into measures that business teams can apply in their ordinary decisions.
03 / UNDERSTANDING
A worked learning case
A fictional bank wants measured growth without excessive dependence on one funding source. Its broad appetite statement is translated into a monitoring measure, an early-warning trigger and assigned escalation responsibility. When the trigger is reached, treasury presents alternatives and their costs. The discussion tests the underlying concentration concern rather than treating the trigger as a decorative reporting colour.
ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE
Try it before you check.
Why is a risk appetite statement insufficient without operational measures and responsibilities?
Show the answer and reasoning
Staff need a way to recognise exposure and act when boundaries are approached.
A broad statement communicates intent but may not tell a business team how to interpret a specific decision. Defined measures, ownership and escalation make that intent usable. They also allow management to assess whether the observed risk remains consistent with the chosen appetite, while checking that the measures represent the intended vulnerability.
Two traps to watch for.
- Equating available risk capacity with a requirement to use it fully.
- Reporting a breach without identifying a responsible decision owner.
YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP
Your revision map
Distinguish capacity, appetite and a transaction-level limit.
Define the risk captured by one fictional indicator.
Write the action required when its early-warning trigger is reached.
Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
