Topic guide: Reading comprehension and textual evidence

Find a passage’s central claim, distinguish explicit detail from supported inference and choose answers whose scope and certainty match what the original text actually establishes.

01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover central idea, detail, inference, tone and contextual meaning. The objective is evidence-matched reading rather than memorising a list of answer-choice tricks detached from actual text.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

Reading comprehension begins with the author’s purpose and the role of each paragraph. A detail question asks what the text states; an inference question asks what follows with support. Neither invites outside knowledge to replace the passage. Track qualifiers such as some, often and may because they limit the reach of a claim.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. An original passage says a branch introduced appointment slots and observed shorter queues on some mornings, but staffing also changed. A supported answer is that shorter queues were observed in those mornings. The text does not establish that appointments alone caused the reduction, that every queue disappeared or that the result applies to all branches.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: Passage: Some customers prefer digital statements, while others request paper. Does the passage establish that all customers prefer digital statements?

Show the answer and reasoning

No.

The qualifier some explicitly limits the digital-preference group, and the second clause identifies customers requesting paper. Replacing some with all expands the claim beyond the passage and conflicts with its contrast. The answer should reflect the stated variation in preference rather than an outside opinion about which statement format is better.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Choosing an option because it repeats distinctive passage words.
  • Turning a qualified observation into a universal causal claim.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. State the main claim in one sentence.

  2. Mark qualifiers and contrast words.

  3. Link each answer to textual evidence.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
