01 / UNDERSTANDING

Learning objectives

Cover the accounting equation, current and non-current classification, owner claims and liability obligations. Interpret composition before moving to ratios or more specialised bank balance-sheet formats.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

The concept in context

A balance sheet records resources and claims at a particular date. Assets are resources, liabilities are obligations, and equity is the residual claim after liabilities. The equation assets equal liabilities plus equity is a structural check, not evidence that the assets can all be sold quickly.

03 / UNDERSTANDING

A worked learning case

Original educational case. A trader has cash of ₹20,000, inventory of ₹50,000 and equipment of ₹30,000. Trade payables are ₹25,000 and a loan is ₹35,000. Assets total ₹1,00,000, liabilities total ₹60,000 and equity is ₹40,000. The same total would tell a different story if most assets were slow-moving stock rather than cash.

ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

Try it before you check.

Original practice: If assets are ₹8 lakh and liabilities are ₹5 lakh, what is equity?

Show the answer and reasoning

₹3 lakh.

Equity is the residual: subtract liabilities of ₹5 lakh from assets of ₹8 lakh. The result of ₹3 lakh balances the equation. It does not mean the owner has ₹3 lakh available in cash, because assets may include inventory, receivables and equipment as well as cash.

Two traps to watch for.

  • Equating equity with the cash balance available for withdrawal.
  • Comparing totals while ignoring asset quality and repayment dates.

YOUR TOPIC-SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP

Your revision map

  1. Classify ten items by their economic nature.

  2. Rebuild the equation after a loan purchase.

  3. Explain why equal totals can conceal different liquidity.

Explain the idea, apply it to a new situation, then check what changed in your reasoning.
